Community Cats

Level: All levels

Audience: All ages and backgrounds including community members, volunteers, advocates, shelter and rescue partners

Community Cats and Kittens is a 2-hour educational workshop that equips participants with the knowledge and confidence to help the cats and kittens living in their community through humane, effective strategies. More than a TNR workshop, this course builds a clear understanding of how community cats, kittens, and shelters are interconnected, and how trap-neuter-return saves lives at every level.

Attendees will:

  • Explore the relationship between community cats and kitten intake, and why effective community cat programs are essential to reducing kitten suffering

  • Learn what to do about kittens found outside—including an in-depth look at the CASA method for assessing when and how to intervene

  • Gain a clear understanding of who community cats are, how they live, and what humane outcomes look like for them

  • Learn the principles and step-by-step process of trap-neuter-return, including trapping, surgery, recovery, and return

  • Train in the Full Circle TNR approach, a targeted method for reducing kitten births

  • Understand best practices for colony care, caregiver support, and long-term management

  • Discuss common challenges, misconceptions, and community conflict—and how to advocate effectively for cats using education and compassion

  • Be empowered to take meaningful action through hands-on guidance, real-world examples, and practical resources

This workshop is ideal for volunteers, advocates, caregivers, and shelter partners seeking to reduce kitten intake, improve outcomes for outdoor cats, and build community-based solutions that work.

Little Kittens, Big Issues

Level: All levels

Audience: All ages and backgrounds including community members, volunteers, advocates, shelter and rescue partners

Little Kittens, Big Issues is a 2-hour companion course to Saving Kittens, designed to deepen understanding of kitten welfare and the systemic challenges kittens face. Offered as Part 1 of a two-class sequence, this session focuses on why kittens are vulnerable, what puts them at risk, and how to intervene—setting the stage for hands-on caregiving skills covered in Saving Kittens.

Attendees will:

  • Explore the big-picture challenges impacting kittens in shelters and communities, including kitten season intake patterns

  • Understand why kittens are uniquely vulnerable, from developmental limitations to systemic challenges

  • Learn why 80% of kittens in shelters are born outdoors, and how to help through TNR, Full Circle, kitten reunion, and assessing the best pathways for kittens found outside

  • Discover the power of fostering, and become empowered to play an active role in caring for orphaned kittens

  • Talk through the human side of fostering, including how to navigate saying goodbye and build compassion resilience

  • Build empathy, urgency, and context for kitten welfare before diving into hands-on care

When paired with Saving Kittens, the two courses create a comprehensive 4-hour curriculum (typically with a lunch break!):

  • Part 1: Little Kittens, Big Issues — Understanding the problem and why kittens need help

  • Part 2: Saving Kittens — Learning how to provide hands-on care for kittens; this format includes bonus instruction in managing kitten health (all-levels).

This format allows audiences to fully grasp both the why and the how of saving kittens—building informed, motivated caregivers and advocates.
